As we head into the home straight towards the summer holidays, I would like to take a moment to reflect on what has already been a very busy and successful term.
I am immensely proud of the children in Year 6 and the way they approached their SATs. They conducted themselves with maturity, resilience and determination, and were a real credit to themselves. My sincere thanks also go to all of the staff who have supported them throughout their journey – your hard work and dedication is truly appreciated. I am very much looking forward to celebrating with Year 6 on the upcoming residential to Gullivers.
I would also like to say a big well done to our Year 2 children, who have been completing their non-statutory SATs assessments. They have approached these with impressive maturity and a positive attitude, and we are extremely proud of them too.

Earth Class
In Earth Class this half term, our learning explores transport, friendship, and our exciting trip to Cannon Hall Farm. We shared stories, built vehicles, and role play our flight to far-away lands where we developed our language skills and teamwork. At the farm, we observed different animals, discussed their care, and strengthen friendships through shared experiences, curiosity, and cooperative play and imaginative thinking skills.
Water Class
Water Class are fully immersed in their exciting History unit on Crime and Punishment, exploring how crime and consequences have changed throughout history. So far, the children have learned about the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Tudors, discovering the different laws, punishments and beliefs of each period. They have been fascinated by how justice has evolved over time and has enjoyed comparing past societies to life today. Through engaging lessons and discussions, the class are developing a deeper understanding of Britain’s history. We are all looking forward to continuing our journey through time and uncovering even more about this fascinating topic. We also developed our Christian value of friendship by working collaboratively with our peers to role-play different scenarios, taking on the roles of jury members, Anglo-Saxons and modern-day people.
Air Class
Air class have been learning about castles during this half term, exploring how people lived long ago and why castles were important. The children have enjoyed working together on creative activities, showing the Christian value of friendship through kindness, teamwork, and supporting one another while sharing ideas and discovering facts
Fire Class
Year 5/6 have worked extremely hard this half term and shown great maturity whilst preparing for their assessments. We are very proud of the effort, resilience and positive attitudes they have demonstrated throughout.
In PE, the children have focused on athletics, particularly long-distance running, where they have shown determination and teamwork. In English, they have enjoyed writing a range of texts, most recently using their imagination alongside their science and geography knowledge to describe newly discovered creatures.
Our topic work on rivers and engineering has got off to a fantastic start, with pupils showing great curiosity and enthusiasm. In Art, the children have produced some excellent pieces linked to both topic and RE work, which are proudly displayed around the school.
Today the whole school have been taking part in mindful activities as part of our Wellbeeing Day.
There has been lots of crafting, happy music and games for everyone to choose from.
Fire Class have made hedgehogs by repurposing old books.

There have also been lots of Bee related activities going on in school today as we raise awareness for the vital role that bees have in our ever changing climate.Thank you for all the donations sent in today - we have raised a fantastic £45 for the British Beekeepers Association.
Each class have had different activities on offer, from outdoor games to making fortune tellers. Earth Class have been doing lots of work about 'Beeing happy' and Air Class have joined with them to watch the Bee Movie even and have a game of Bee Kerplunk!
School Council
The School Council have met recently and have decided to support our local food bank whilst raising awareness for Fairtrade.
After half term, they will be collecting donations of Fairtrade food items (or any other suitable items) and visiting the food bank to give them our donations. Any donations would be gratefully received until Monday 15th June, when we will be making the donation.
Sporting Successes and Upcoming Events
It has been another fantastic half term for sport across the school, with so many pupils representing us brilliantly both in and out of competition.
Our KS2 girls’ cricket team were great ambassadors for the school, showing excellent teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout their competition. The Year 3/4 boys’ cricket teams were also amazing, with one team successfully progressing through to the next round — a wonderful achievement!
We were incredibly proud of all the children who took part in the swimming gala, where the team achieved an impressive 3rd place finish. Well done to everyone involved for their effort and commitment.
Pupils across KS2 were also invited to take part in the Mini London Marathon event at The Snaith School. In school, both Earth Class and Air Class completed at least two miles each, showing fantastic resilience and enthusiasm.
During Mental Health Week, the whole school joined together for The Big School Workout with Joe Wicks. It was fantastic to see every child getting involved together and enjoying being active as a school community.
We are already looking forward to another busy and exciting half term, with upcoming events including the rounders competition, dance competition, pickleball festival and, of course, Sports Day!
Farewell...
Mrs Huby – Retirement Announcement
After many dedicated years of service, our much-loved TA, Mrs Huby, will be hanging up her hat this July. During her time with us, she has taken on a wide range of roles including caretaker, cleaner, Teaching Assistant, Nursery TA, Midday Supervisor, HLTA, and most recently Dyslexia Lead. Her commitment, versatility and warmth have made a lasting impact on our whole school community.
There will truly be a huge Mrs Huby–shaped hole left in our Cowick Family. She will be missed tremendously by staff, children and families alike. We wish her every happiness in her well-deserved retirement—please don’t be a stranger!
Mrs Huby’s final working day will be in July.
Mrs Turner – Moving On
After three years with us here at Cowick, Mrs Turner will be moving on to pastures new. During her time here, she has made a valuable contribution through her work supporting individual children, leading 1:1 and small group interventions, and supervising at lunchtime.
We would like to thank Mrs Turner for all her hard work and dedication, and we wish her all the very best in her new role. Mrs Turner's last day will be 22/5/2026 but we hope to welcome her back for the Y6 rounders match and to celebrate with us at the leavers’ assembly.
Uniform Reminder
We would like to remind all families of our school uniform expectations. Recently, we have noticed that standards have slipped, and this has coincided with a dip in behaviour across the school.
Please ensure that your child is attending school in the correct uniform at all times, including appropriate PE kit. Please ensure shorts and skirts are of an appropriate length, no shorter than just above the knee. Hoodies are not school uniform and shouldn't be worn, with the exception of Year 6 Hoodies in the last half term, when they will be presented to the children ready for their residential. Footwear should be plain black school shoes. Jewellery is not permitted, with the exception of small stud earrings and watches.
Hair accessories should be simple and in keeping with school uniform – large bows are not appropriate. For PE, children should wear suitable trainers.
If your child wears shoes with laces, please ensure they are able to tie these independently.

Safeguarding
We have received this notification from North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Partnership
We are aware of a viral trend circulating online where children are encouraged to heat soft “squishy” toys (sometimes called NeeDoh or jelly cube toys) in a microwave.
This is extremely dangerous. When heated, these toys can burst and release hot contents, which may cause serious burns to the hands, face and skin.
What you can do:
- Talk to your child about the risks of copying online challenges or trends
- Remind them that not everything seen online is safe or accurate
- Ensure squishy toys or similar items are never heated or microwaved
- Encourage your child to come to you if they see something online that concerns them

Reminders
After School Club
Just a gentle reminder that the After School Club provision closes at 5.30pm. Please collect your children on time.
Fidgets
A reminder that fidgets are used as specific adaptations for children on the SEN register, and only when agreed with the SEN Manager/SENCo.
Children should not bring fidgets into school unless there has been prior arrangement and it is part of agreed actions on a Termly Support Plan. The purpose of a fidget is to support concentration, therefore it must be small enough to fit in the palm of the hand and must be completely noiseless.

Toys/Swaps
Please do not allow your child to bring toys or items for swapping into school.
These can often lead to disagreements and disputes, which we are keen to avoid in order to maintain a calm and positive learning environment.
