We are proud to announce that we are one of 136 schools that has achieved the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) this month, a nationally recognised accreditation that celebrates a commitment to developing excellence in science leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.

Led by the University of Hertfordshire, for over a decade the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) has been setting children on a path to a life filled with exciting possibilities and opportunities, by giving them access to a strong foundation in quality primary science education. Over 7000 Quality Marks have now been awarded, impacting on the learning of almost 2,000,000 children.

PSQM is a comprehensive, evidence-informed, professional learning programme which equips primary science subject leaders with the knowledge, confidence, and expert support they need to transform the quality and profile of science education in their schools.

Helen Sizer, PSQM Director said: ‘The Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) recognises a school’s commitment to developing and strengthening science education, celebrating the positive impact this has on children’s learning and understanding of the world around them.

Our congratulations go to the whole school community on this achievement and particularly to the school’s science subject leader(s), who has led this process through participation in the PSQM professional learning programme and by driving a cycle of reflection, development and improvement across the school. Their leadership helps to ensure that all children benefit from high-quality science teaching and learning.

Everyone involved should be very proud of the positive difference they are making to children’s learning and of their commitment to continuous improvement in primary science education.’

Today we gather, smiles and tears, To celebrate over twenty years. Though if we're honest, truth be told, You've been here so long, you're part of the mould!

From cleaner and caretaker, keys in hand, Keeping our school looking smart and grand. To Breakfast Club with toast at dawn, Helping children start their day before the yawn.

You've worked in Nursery, helping little ones grow, Wiping tears and giving confidence to bloom and glow. At lunchtime too, you'd keep things right, Sorting playground problems with wisdom and might.

As a TA and HLTA you've guided the way, Helping children learn a little more each day. As Dyslexia Lead you've helped so many succeed, Showing patience, care and exactly what they need.

You've worn so many hats over the years, Shared so much laughter and calmed so many fears. You've supported children, staff and families too, There's hardly a job in this school you didn't do!

You've become a school institution, that's perfectly true, And honestly, we're not quite sure what we'll do without you. Who will know every child, every parent, every room? Who will rescue us all from impending doom?

You've brought humour wherever you've been, Usually saying exactly what everyone's thinking! You've made us laugh on difficult days, And brightened our school in countless ways.

In fact, to show just how much you're adored, Today's staff fashion has reached new heights of accord. Temporary tattoos worn with pride and delight, All in your honour, what a wonderful sight!

Some might say that's a little extreme, But then you've always been part of the team. After twenty-plus years, you've earned such acclaim, Though we're not sure the tattoos will ever come off again!

So thank you, Mrs Huby, for all you have done, For your dedication, kindness and sense of fun. For every child you've helped, every colleague you've cheered, Every challenge you've tackled and every volunteer role you've steered.

You leave behind memories, friendships and a remarkable legacy too, And Cowick simply wouldn't be the same without you.

So as this chapter comes to its end, We say goodbye to a colleague and friend. With gratitude, love and admiration so true,

We are pleased to let you know that the After School Club will continue next year.

Breakfast provision will also continue and will be open from 7.30am for children who have booked with the office.

Breakfast will be a choice of toast, cereal or a breakfast muffin, along with fruit, if available. After School Club will now have a choice of wraps or sandwiches, a bun, biscuit or fruit, if available.  

Thank you to all the parents that have sent back their expressions of interest in the free breakfast clubs offered by the government to be run by schools. On Monday 6th July, the government announced the names of the schools that will be funded for the free provision from September 26 and unfortunately this is not available to our school yet. We will keep you updated on any progress as we hear about it, but in the mean time we are pleased to let you know that we are going to run a similar model to the funded government one so we can offer breakfasts to children from Reception to Year 6. This will be a trial until Christmas initially.

If you would like your child to have a school breakfast, you will be able to sign them in from 8.15 to 8.30 every morning for a small charge of £1.50. They will receive toast or cereal and a breakfast muffin before they go to class. You will be able to pay on the door or be invoiced for the days they attend without needing to book them a place in advance. Please note, a place will still need to be booked via the office for children attending the wraparound breakfast club provision. Prices for wraparound breakfast club will therefore remain the same as last year and include their breakfast.

From September 2026, families receiving Universal Credit will be able to access free school meals starting from the 2026/27 school year. All parents who need to reapply for Free School Meals have been contacted by school and hopefully you have all received confirmation that you have been successful. If you have been contacted and not managed to reapply yet, please do so as a matter of urgency. There is nothing further to do if you have not been contacted, as the ERYC Benefits Section hold the details necessary to carry out the checks.
